Building on this foundation, Dr. Morris transitioned into leadership roles within strategic services and information technology. By combining professional experience with advanced graduate training, she designed and implemented data-driven solutions that enhanced capital management, governance frameworks, and operational efficiency within large public-sector agencies. Dr. Morris has demonstrated sustained leadership within the Jamaican diaspora, helping to organise summits and international symposiums focused on educational awareness and advancement for the benefit of schools and communities both locally and internationally. She has served as President of the New York Alumni Chapter and currently holds the role of Diaspora Ambassador to the University College’s Alumni Association.

A proud alumnus of The Mico Teachers’ College, Mr. Fuller exemplifies the institution’s enduring tradition of leadership grounded in service. Appointed Custos Rotulorum of Kingston in 2010, he has served with distinction as Chief Magistrate of the parish, advancing justice, civic responsibility, and community development. His exemplary public record has also included several appointments as Acting Governor-General of Jamaica, reflecting the high level of national trust placed in his judgement, integrity, and leadership.

Mr. Fuller’s public life is complemented by a distinguished career in Jamaica’s book and education sector. He began his professional journey in 1968, including during his years as a student at The Mico. Now Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kingston Bookshop Limited, he has guided the organization’s growth into Jamaica’s largest book selling enterprise, with multiple retail locations and a regional agency network representing leading international publishers.

His professional contributions have remained closely aligned with national educational priorities. Mr. Fuller has worked closely with the Ministry of Education on major initiatives, including the coordination of secondary school textbook distribution under the national book rental system. Through scholarships, bursaries, internships, and institutional support, he has consistently expanded access to education, including sustained engagement with The Mico University College.

Awards and Honours

A founding member and past president of the Book Industry Association of Jamaica (BIAJ), Mr. Fuller has received several national and professional honours. These include The Mico University College Alumni Association’s Gold Medal Award and the BIAJ Trail Blazer Award. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Huddersfield in the United Kingdom.

In October, The Mico University College usually joins the global community to observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The month is dedicated to raising awareness, supporting survivors, and promoting life-saving education. This year’s activities will once again bring the Mico family together in a powerful show of solidarity and scholarship.

To bring awareness to Breast Cancer students, faculty, and staff gather on the campus lawns, dressed in vibrant shades of pink for the annual Pink Day and Balloon Release Ceremony, becoming a cherished tradition led by the The Mico Students’ Guild. 

Participants release dozens of pink balloons into the sky, with hands raised and hearts united. Each balloon represents courage, remembrance, and hope for a future free from breast cancer. The event is both a moment of reflection and a call to action for continued advocacy, early detection, and community support.

Today, President of The Mico University College, Dr. Asburn Pinnock, reflected on the importance of the observance, saying:

 “Our pink balloon release is a testament to our collective compassion and our responsibility as educators and nation builders. So it is more than symbolic”. 

He notes that the fight against breast cancer requires awareness, education, and research, and says that,

“At The Mico, we are proud that our academic community is contributing to this critical national and global discourse. Through both activism and scholarship, we stand with survivors and their families, and recommit ourselves to advancing knowledge that can save lives.”

Research Excellence: Mico’s Academic Contribution to the Global Dialogue

Beyond campus activities, Mico’s commitment to breast cancer awareness is also anchored in rigorous scholarship.

One of The Mico’s own, Mr. Fabian G. Miller, is among the co-authors of a seminal research chapter called, “Quality of Life and Well-Being of Breast Cancer Patients” .

The study presents a comprehensive review of the physical, psychological, and social impacts of breast cancer, focusing on how these dimensions shape the lived experiences of patients and survivors. The research highlights critical insights that inform patient care and health education. It draws on global literature and validated quality-of-life instruments, and presented key findings emphasizing:

• Social support networks – including partners, family, friends, and community organizations. These play a decisive role in improving patients’ physical health, emotional well-being, and overall survival outcomes. Social isolation, by contrast, is linked to significantly higher mortality rates.
  
• Physical activity and structured rehabilitation interventions – such as tai chi, yoga, Pilates, and combined aerobic-resistance training. These have measurable benefits in reducing treatment side effects, enhancing vitality, and improving long-term health outcomes for breast cancer patients.
  
• Psychoeducational and psychosocial interventions – including cognitive behavioural therapy. These have been shown to reduce depression, anxiety, and pain intensity, improving patients’ capacity to adjust emotionally and socially to post-treatment life.
  
• The study also underscores the need for integrated care models – combining medical treatment with emotional, social, and lifestyle support. These ensure that survivors enjoy the highest possible quality of life during and after treatment.
  

This work is particularly significant for the Caribbean context. While much of the existing literature originates from North America and Europe, Mr. Miller’s contribution helps bridge global research with local realities. He is helping to open space for further studies on breast cancer survivorship and community-based interventions in Jamaica and the wider region.

Awareness Through Action

The annual balloon release at Mico is both a communal gesture of solidarity and a public health reminder: early detection through regular screenings, combined with sustained emotional and community support, remains the most effective defense against breast cancer.

Through research, education, and activism, The Mico continues to embody its motto, “Do it with thy Might.” The University celebrates those who are courageously fighting the disease, honours those who have passed, and stands firmly with survivors and their families.

Mrs. Williams-Pinnock is a Miconian who has served The Mico with distinction for the past six years as a lecturer in the Department of Language, Literacy, and Literature, and more recently as Faculty Research Coordinator. Her leadership, academic expertise, and passion for student development have made her an invaluable member of the Mico community.

Williams-Pinnock holds an Education Specialist Degree (Ed.S.) in Curriculum and Instruction from Liberty University, a Master of Education in Language Education from the University of the West Indies, and a Bachelor of Education in Language and Literacy from The Mico University College — all earned with high distinction.

Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Williams-Pinnock has contributed to national and international education initiatives, trained teachers through the Ministry of Education’s literacy programmes, and mentored student leaders at The Mico. Her scholarship has been published locally and internationally, reinforcing her commitment to advancing inclusive education and literacy.

The University is confident that Mrs. Williams-Pinnock will bring vision, innovation, and dedication to her new role as Acting Dean of College, as she continues to help shape the future of education at The Mico.

Research Highlights: ITER Scholars Earn International Recognition

The Institute for Technological and Educational Research (ITER) has opened the new academic year on a high note, with members of its research community being recognized for outstanding contributions on the global stage.

At the 4th International Conference on Green Sustainable Technology and Management (ICGSTM 2025), held on July 16, 2025, two Miconians distinguished themselves among an international field of presenters. Dr. Lawrence Grant and Mr. Fabian Miller were each awarded Best Oral Presenter in their respective tracks — Education & Liberal Arts (Dr. Grant) and Health & Life Science (Mr. Miller). Their achievements underscore the quality and competitiveness of Mico research in diverse disciplines.

Further extending the impact of our research, Mrs. Shellon Samuels-White and Mr. Miller celebrated the publication of their work in Volume 7 of Akkon Schriftenreihe, “Future Minds in Global Health – The International Young Researchers’ Symposium on Global Health 2024.” This significant volume was launched at the World Health Summit in Berlin, further highlighting the international reach and influence of scholarship emerging from The Mico.

These successes serve not only as personal milestones for the individuals recognized but also as collective achievements for the institution. They reflect the dedication of our researchers and the commitment of ITER to advancing scholarship that resonates globally.

As the Office of Quality Assurance continues to emphasize, every research effort — whether large or small — contributes to institutional growth and effectiveness. ITER’s recent achievements remind us that sustained curiosity, rigorous inquiry, and collaborative effort position The Mico University College as a leader in knowledge creation and dissemination.

In a recent commentary, Dean Leroy Fearon underscored the opportunities that this new vision of global governance holds for SIDS like Jamaica, which often finds itself marginalized in international decision-making. The Commentary is titled, “Implications of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s global governance vision for SIDS”.

Dean Fearon argues that the GGI is significant because it aligns with the ongoing struggle of smaller nations to secure fair representation, reliable partnerships, and sustainable pathways for development.

A Voice for the Vulnerable

At its heart, the GGI calls for a more balanced world order in which every nation’s sovereignty is respected. For SIDS, this resonates deeply. These states, often vulnerable to climate shocks, economic volatility, and geopolitical marginalization, need frameworks that guarantee not just participation, but influence. By centering equality, the GGI opens the door for SIDS to assert their priorities on global agendas — whether in climate negotiations, trade policy, or security frameworks.

Development Through Innovation and Sustainability

Professor Fearon also highlights the GGI’s emphasis on renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and scientific collaboration. For the Caribbean, this focus is timely. Jamaica and its regional neighbors face high energy costs due to dependence on fossil fuel imports. Investments in renewable energy, under a cooperative global framework, could reduce costs and advance climate resilience. Similarly, scientific collaboration and AI-driven innovation can strengthen Caribbean education, healthcare, and agriculture, ensuring that SIDS are not passive recipients of technology but active partners in shaping sustainable solutions.

Multilateralism and Security in a Fractured World

Another aspect of the GGI that resonates with SIDS is its call for multilateralism and shared security. Historically, small states have relied on collective bargaining, whether through CARICOM, the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), or the Commonwealth. The GGI reinforces this approach by promoting cooperative responses to global crises. For SIDS facing rising sea levels, stronger hurricanes, and economic shocks, collaborative security is not an abstract goal — it is a lifeline.

Turning Vulnerability into Leverage

Professor Fearon’s analysis points to a strategic insight: SIDS should not view themselves only as vulnerable, but as crucial actors in the global system. Their unique position at the frontline of climate change, their maritime resources, and their cultural and diplomatic influence can all be leveraged in shaping global governance. The GGI provides a framework within which this leverage can be exercised more effectively.

What It Means for The Mico Community

For an institution like The Mico University College, the GGI’s principles connect directly with our mission of preparing educators who embody integrity, leadership, and innovation. As Jamaica navigates this evolving global landscape, teachers will play a central role in equipping students with the skills to participate in sustainable development, harness new technologies, and advocate for equity on the world stage.

The lesson from Professor Fearon’s commentary is clear: global governance is no longer a distant concern. It is deeply intertwined with the Caribbean’s future. For Jamaica and other SIDS, the GGI represents not only an opportunity for survival but also for transformation — from the margins of international politics to meaningful leadership in shaping a fairer, more resilient global order.
